Lake shorelines or the highest reaches of the ocean tide provide us with countless treasures or reveal the twisted roots of Maine spruce trees that make their home at the waters edge. In order to isolate and show the graphic elements and details there, I choose to capture these scenes in black and white, often standing chest deep in the lake. The challenge of working in the water to look back at the shore makes for extensive pre-planning. Traveling only by canoe and ensuring that I don’t submerge my vintage camera gear, I bring a 9 foot ladder and gigantic tripod and paddle off at dawn, often alone. I think the character of the water’s edge is best revealed via black and white film, and it really adds a fine art aspect to these impeccably sharp prints
